Elements of
Arrangement (terms)

Foundation
– The rhythm section (usually drums, bass, etc.)

Pad
– any long sustaining note or chord (usually synth, organ, guitar, etc.)

Rhythm
– anything playing counter to the foundation (usually aux percussion)

Lead
– lead vocal, lead instrument or solo

Fills – occur between the lead lines (answers the lead; adds interest)
Misc.

EQ and Compression are commonly used "in-line" (insert).

Reverbs and Delays are commonly used "side-chain" (aux).

Compression is generally used before EQ.
